Definition of coaching and mentoring

Introduction

Coaching and mentoring are important aspect for any organization to enhance the sustainable development of the organization. While coaching is a time-specific and subject oriented approach to enhance specific skills and capabilities of employees in an organization. On the other hand, mentoring is a long-term approach to enhance abroad skills of employees. However, there are significant differences between coaching and mentoring. This article has provided the definition of coaching and mentoring.

Definition of coaching

Coaching is a way to develop the employees or an organization in which the experienced person called coach trains and consult with the employees (also called coachee) over a period of time. Coaching can also be called management development, corporate development etc. Coaching is generally focused on some specific aspects of problems which the coach wants to incorporate among the coaches in a specific time frame. There are different ways of conducting coaching, these ways can be answering, questioning, describing, and explaining to coachee. The main intention of coaching is to improve the human resources of an organization. The coachee afterwards can play significant role to achieve the organizational objectives because the improved knowledge, attitude and perception can positively affect workplace performance.

Definition of mentoring:

Mentoring is a type of casual relationship between a more experienced person and a less experienced person about a subject matter regardless of their ages. In such relationship, mentor generally provides advices, directions in interpersonal skills, social skills, culture or anything in different times in an unstructured way. This means mentoring is conducted in casual ways, this is not a formal approach. Such relationship is generally friendly, as a result the mentee can adopt a lot of knowledge from the mentor. Mentorship can play significant role in any organization because the skills of the employees are improved in their attitude, manner, and perception even on skills.

It is important to understand the definition of coaching and mentoring because understanding the difference will help to devise effective coaching and mentoring plans.
